American Board of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (ABAIM) Aims to Educate and Certify Healthcare Professionals in AI, and Related Technologies
The ABAIM plans to credential healthcare professionals and anyone else who seeks a greater understanding of the growing role and use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) solutions in health care.

LOS ANGELES, MARCH 09, 2020 -- The American Board of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (ABAIM) is pleased to announce its recent incorporation as a not-for-profit entity. The ABAIM plans to credential healthcare professionals and anyone else who seeks a greater understanding of the growing role and use of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) solutions in health care.

Spearheading this effort is Orest Boyko, MD, PhD, Associate Professor (Research) of Psychology at The USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience Bridge Institute, located at the University of Southern California; and Anthony Chang, MD, Chief Intelligence and Innovation Officer at the Sharon Disney Lund Medical Intelligence and Innovation Institute (MI3) at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Orange, CA. Dr. Chang is also the author of an upcoming book entitled Intelligence-Based Medicine: Principles and Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Human Cognition in Clinical Medicine and Healthcare and is the Editor-in-Chief of Intelligence-Based Medicine, an open access peer-review journal, published by Elsevier. Both are actively involved in the development and application of AI, ML, and DL in medicine.

Co-chaired by Dr. Boyko and Dr. Chang, ABAIM’s growing board comprises professionals from an array of multidisciplinary and institutional backgrounds. These currently include: Matthew Lungren, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, Stanford University Medical Center; Kevin Maher, Professor of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine; Spyro Mousses, PhD, CEO, Systems Oncology; Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood, PhD, IBM Fellow & Chief Scientist, IBM Research; Sharief Taraman, MD, Health Science Associate Professor, UC Irvine School of Medicine; and Dennis Wall, PhD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Biomedical Data Science, Stanford Medical School.

Dr. Boyko, stated, “Artificial Intelligence and its related technologies are increasingly important not only to radiology and other medical imaging professionals, but also to health care as a whole, and I am grateful for this opportunity the Department of Psychology and The USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience Bridge Institute have provided. This unique collaboration has enabled us to assemble the current stakeholders in a unified effort to create a truly interdisciplinary educational approach to advance the adoption of AI, ML, and DL in health care.”

Dr. Chang continued, “The birth of the ABAIM is a tremendously exciting and major milestone in bringing AI education and certification to all healthcare providers. The ABAIM’s modular curriculum will enable a wide range of healthcare professionals, including clinicians, executives, technicians, and nurses, as well as patients, data scientists, and information technology personnel, to become knowledgeable in the application of AI, ML, and DL tools and technologies. Our vision of creating synergy between healthcare and AI-related technologies will bring about a new paradigm of intelligence-based medicine and transform health care for everyone.”

Individuals who successfully complete a comprehensive, standardized exam developed by the ABAIM, which has received an unrestricted educational grant from Guerbet, LLC, will receive Board certification. The certification will help ensure that these individuals have an advanced understanding of AI, ML, and DL, as well as the tools to analyze the benefits and pitfalls of these technologies in real-world scenarios. The ABAIM’s ultimate goal is to enable healthcare professionals to participate in development, assessment, selection, and implementation of AI, ML, and DL tools for their benefit and that of the institutions they serve today and in the future.

About ABAIM
The American Board of Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (ABAIM) was formed by Orest Boyko, MD, PhD and Anthony Chang, MD, as a unique credentialing body for individuals who seek a greater knowledge and understanding of the roles of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning in health care and medicine. Through board governance, the ABAIM is developing a series of credentialing exams designed to foster greater knowledge and understanding of these technologies.

About MI3
The Sharon Disney Lund Medical Intelligence and Innovation Institute (MI3) at Children’s Hospital of Orange County is a first-of-its-kind institute that creates, focuses and executes projects in the areas of artificial intelligence and innovation in pediatric medicine. These two interrelated disciplines, extremely limited in development in the pediatric realm, promise to change the trajectory of pediatric care around the world.

MI3 aims to foster robust development of artificial intelligence methodologies, as well as innovative advances in emerging areas such as genomic medicine, regenerative medicine, robotics, nanotechnology, and medical applications/devices. MI3 is dedicated to empowering data intelligence and medical innovation at CHOC and to driving innovation leadership in the international pediatrics community.
